Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) – Everything you need to know

There’s no denying that when talking about “free and open-source software,” there are several ideas that can easily invoke complex as well as emotional discussions. However, that’s what we’re here to get straight! First, FOSS (Free and Open-Source Software) is a mix of free software as well as open-source software.

Therefore, it’s vivid that there are similarities between the two, and still, there’re as well differences that go unnoticed; for instance, free software can be open source, but not all open source software is free. Ideally, free and open-source software doesn’t mean that software is cost-free. It literally means that the source code of the software is widely open for everyone, and anyone is open to use, modify and study the code.

NLP Cloud helps app developers add language processing

NLP tools and services are taking off, but developers often struggle with the hurdle of getting NLP models into production. NLP Cloud is a new AI startup focused on lowering the barriers for developers trying to create apps for sorting support tickets, extracting leads, analyzing social networks, and developing tools for economic intelligence.

NLP has been around for decades, but interest has seen a dramatic uptick with the recent introduction of transformers, a new type of neural network. Google researchers demonstrated in 2017 how transformers dramatically improved the speed, performance, and precision of NLP tools. Transformers made possible the much larger models Google’s BERT and OpenAI’s GPT-3. The capabilities are available through innovative open source libraries Hugging Face and spaCy.

NLPCloud.io helps devs add language processing smarts to their apps

While visual ‘no code‘ tools are helping businesses get more out of computing without the need for armies of in-house techies to configure software on behalf of other staff, access to the most powerful tech tools — at the ‘deep tech’ AI coal face — still requires some expert help (and/or costly in-house expertise).

This is where bootstrapping French startup, NLPCloud.io, is plying a trade in MLOps/AIOps — or ‘compute platform as a service’ (being as it runs the queries on its own servers) — with a focus on natural language processing (NLP), as its name suggests.
