Core technologies that power cloud computing –Linux, Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry, Docker, to name a few –are developed in open communities. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation supports innovation in OSS for cloud computing and has sponsorship and participation from practically all major players in the cloud ecosystem.

A recent survey [1] of 3,440 professional developers and managers showed the widespread influence of open source, both in cloud technology and as an essential in-demand and growing skill in the industry. For example, 69% of respondents thought that contributions to open-source projects result in better professional opportunities.

Bob van Luijt’s career in technology started at age 15, building websites to help people sell toothbrushes online. Not many 15 year-olds do that. Apparently, this gave van Luijt enough of a head start to arrive at the confluence of technology trends today.

Van Luijt went on to study arts but ended up working full time in technology anyway. In 2015, when Google introduced its RankBrain algorithm, the quality of search results jumped up. It was a watershed moment, as it introduced machine learning in search. A few people noticed, including van Luijt, who saw a business opportunity and decided to bring this to the masses.

Open3D is an open-source library designed for processing 3D data. It was introduced by Qian-Yi Zhou, Jaesik Park and Vladlen Koltun – researchers at Intel Labs (research paper).

Its backend enables parallelization while the frontend exposes several useful algorithms and data structures of C++ and Python programming languages. With a small set of dependencies, it requires little effort for compiling Open3D code from source and setting it up on various platforms.

Amazon AWS, Hugging Face team up to spread open-source deep learning

Two years ago, the New York-based startup Hugging Face burst onto the natural language processing scene with a way to let many more parties participate in state-of-the art deep learning. Transformers, a programming kit to quickly grab any of a number of natural language neural networks, including Google’s BERT, was posted as a library to be invoked from the dominant programming frameworks, PyTorch and TensorFlow.

It has grown and grown in popularity. More than 5,000 organizations are now using the library, the company says. The popularity of that toolkit has been recognized by Amazon AWS, the world’s biggest clouding computing provider, and the two companies Tuesday announced a partnership to combine Transformers with the best aspects of Amazon AWS’s programming tools.

Is TensorFlow ‘for Boomers’? PyTorch May Gain More Ground in Machine Translation

PyTorch, the open source framework used to build machine learning models, including those used for machine translation, released its newest version, 1.8, on March 4, 2021.

According to PyTorch’s official announcement, “highlights include updates for compiler, code optimization, frontend APIs for scientific computing, large scale training for pipeline and model parallelism, and Mobile tutorials.” Prior to this release, PyTorch released version 1.7 in October 2020.
