Forget the ‘sharing economy’: technology is about to usher in the ‘circular’ economy

It now seems clear that decades of effort focused on sustainability and corporate responsibility initiatives have struggled to make a difference. Production has outstripped planetary boundaries and the environment is contending with mass-scale pollution. But why is this? To put it into a succinct argument: ‘Companies can’t be sustainable in an unsustainable society.

The idea of a sharing economy was borne out of a need to rectify this situation. It is a system built around the sharing of human and physical resources and there are hundreds of compelling new businesses tapping into this idea.

ANALYSIS: Circular and sharing, when two become one?

If there is one thing the sustainability movement appears to want ownership of, it is the word ‘economy’. A circular version has been doing the rounds for some time, but it could be under threat from a new kid on the block, equally as caring, but perhaps, well, more sharing.

A circular economy. Or a sharing economy. Which would you put your money on? The first would claim to have more gravitas as it involves a seismic shift in not only how business works, but how resources are utilized.
