Google Arts & Culture’s open source Woolaroo app uses AI to help preserve endangered languages

There are thousands of different languages spoken around the planet, but a sizable number of these are at risk of disappearing. In fact, of the over 7,000 native languages currently in use, some 3,000 are in danger, and on average, a language becomes extinct every fourteen days.

Google Arts & Culture is taking action to help preserve these endangered languages. Its new Woolaroo app is an open-source photo-translation platform powered by Google Cloud that makes use of machine learning and image recognition.

Nvidia Invests $1.5M in Mozilla Common Voice Open-Source Project

Nvidia is partnering with Mozilla to advance voice AI and speech recognition, beginning with a $1.5 million investment in the Mozilla Common Voice program. The open-source database of cataloged and transcribed voice recordings supports those developing voice tech who didn’t have access to the tech giants’ proprietary data.

Mozilla Common Voice began in 2017 as an alternative to major corporations for finding the huge amount of data needed to train a voice AI. Common Voice also formed as a potential resource for making voice assistants more accessible to the people whose languages and speech habits may be difficult for the more widely used variants like Google Assistant and Alexa assistants to understand.  And the database continues to grow at a rapid pace.

Google unveils logic programming language: Logica

Google introduced the open-source Logica programming language this week. It is designed to compile to SQL and run on Google BigQuery with experimental support for PostgreSQL and SQLite.  According to the company, the language was created to make it easier for developers who have to deal with the challenges of SQL.

The challenges with coding using SQL often include constructing statements from long chains of English words and limited support for abstraction. SQL is also rarely tested because testing SQL queries” sounds rather esoteric to most engineers.
